The recently-launched Indian Boxing Council (IBC) has received a massive fillip in its bid to promote professional boxing in the country with one of the oldest world bodies in the sport -- WBA -- offering membership to it.

Launched last week, the IBC has received a letter of support and an offer of membership from the World Boxing Association (WBA) besides an invite to the annual convention of the World Boxing Organisation (WBO).

"The World Boxing Association family wishes you and your team every success on this great initiative...The World Boxing Association Directors and members will be glad to support and cooperate with the IBC to harvest great achievements working together for the progress of boxing," WBA vice President Gilberto Jesus Mendoza wrote in a letter to IBC President (Retd) Brig. P K Muralidharan Raja.

Besides, the IBC has been extended an invite for the WBO convention to be from October 26 to 30 in Orlando. Both the WBA and WBO are part of a quartet of the oldest world bodies running professional boxing all around the globe.

The boxers who decide to sign up with the IBC would be guaranteed a minimum of four fights in a year and Rs 6 lakh as the basic winner's prize purse.

The IBC will hold bouts for the national title, the winners of which will progress to the world rounds.
