A 25-year-old woman disappeared mysteriously after she delivered a baby boy in a civil hospital here, police said.
The woman, who delivered a baby boy last evening at 7.15 pm, was missing since 11.30pm. She left her son behind, SMO Kamal Kishore said.
She had gone out on the pretext of calling her relative and did not return, he said.
At the time of getting admitted, the woman identified herself as Punita, wife of Sampuran Singh, a resident of Satnampura, he said, adding that a man accompanying her claimed to be her husband.
A case under Section 317 (exposure and abandonment of child under twelve years, by parent or person having care of it) of IPC was registered against the woman, City SHO Paramsunil Singh Randhawa said.
During investigation, the address of the couple was found to be fake, police said.
Police suspected illicit relationship as the reason of her abandoning the child.
"The pregnancy could have reached an advanced stage or early abortion could not have been managed by the woman," police said.
Hence, the delivery and mysterious disappearance of the possibly unwed mother, police said.
Meanwhile, lady staff of the hospital was looking after the baby, who is healthy and weighs 2.5 kg.
