A 23-year-old woman was allegedly strangled to death by her husband and in-laws over dowry demands at Sotai village here, police said today.

Sonia was married to Devendra in April last year. After some time, her in-laws allegedly started pressuring her for more dowry, they said.

Last night, her husband and in-laws allegedly strangled her to death and then hung her from the neck with a rope to make it look like suicide, police said.

They then took her to the Metro Hospital where she was declared "brought dead" by the doctors. Her husband and in-laws fled from the hospital after that, police said.

Rope marks were found on her neck, they said, adding the body was handed over to her family after post-mortem.

A case under sections 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 304B (dowry death) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of IPC was registered against her in-laws and investigation is on, police said.
