Accusing the West Bengal government of trying to curb peaceful protest by opposition parties, CPI-M general secretary Sitaram Yechury today condemned the police lathicharge on Left activists yesterday.

"We condemn this police brutality. It is a shame. The TMC is trying to use brute force to scuttle the Opposition and democratic voices against this fascist regime. The more they get detached from the masses the more they will resort to such brutal tactics," Yechury observed.

"The people will unite against this oppressive regime and defeat the atrocities," Yechury said.

Several Left activists, including CPI-M central committee member Dipak Dasgupta and some women, were injured yesterday when the police lathicharged them during a march to the city police headquarters.

The police had also said that they were forced to resort to lathicharge when attacked by the demonstrators in which some police personnel received injuries.
