In a condolence message, Singh said Zenawi "was a towering statesman who effectively articulated and advanced the continent's interest in the international fora.
"In his death, Ethiopia has lost a remarkable leader whose contribution towards peace, progress and development of his country will be long remembered," the Prime Minister said.
Singh said he cherishes the memories of several of his meetings with Zenawi including those during his visit to Ethiopia in May 2011.
"The traditionally close and friendly relations between Ethiopia and India gained enormously under the leadership and guidance of Prime Minister Meles," he said.
