I had the privilege of being able to attend a couple of investment conferences in India over the last week. One clear takeaway was that policy makers and independent observers are now reconciled to 6.5 to seven per cent GDP growth. Many people privately conceded that India is likely to bump along at these growth rates for some time, unless and until policy-making improves.

The year 2011 was a really nasty one for the Indian equity markets, with the Nifty index down about 25 per cent, mid-cap indices down nearly 35 per cent &mdash; and in dollar terms India was the worst-performing market of 2011, down about 37 per cent. Everything that could have gone wrong in 2011 seemingly did. Investors began the year expecting GDP growth to clock near nine per cent; it will be near seven per cent.

In the US, the S&amp;P 500 is off to its best start since 1987, and is being led by deep cyclicals (materials, home-builders, semiconductors) and financials.
