Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), credited with starting the equity cult in India, may find this hard to digest. The country&rsquo;s largest listed company has lost almost 175,000 investors since September 2010, according to regulatory filings. In the last quarter alone, the company lost nearly 46,000 investors. At the end of December 2011, it had 3.43 million small shareholders with investments of up to Rs 1 lakh.

Advancing stocks are outpacing declining ones on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) this year, indicating marked improvement in the market breadth compared to 2011. However, the advance-decline ratio has declined marginally in February, compared with last month, suggesting the rally is now slowing down.

Some large-cap stocks may be out of bounds for the direct foreign route recently opened by the government. The new class of investors may have to buy these from existing foreign investors at a premium to the market rates, say analysts. In sectors like banking, telecom and real estate, there are composite sectoral caps under the existing foreign direct investment (FDI) policy.

Eton Park, the global fund management house floated by former Goldman Sachs star Erich Mindich, is sitting on a notional loss of $73 million or 58 per cent on its investment in Reliance&rsquo;s mutual fund business. The change in profit outlook for the industry, driven by lacklustre equity markets and crippling regulatory changes, have led to this value erosion, say analysts.
