Day 3 of the third Test between England and India at Lord’s ended in dramatic fashion, with both teams finishing with identical first-innings scores of 387. Despite a strong foundation laid earlier in the day, India failed to take a lead as late wickets from Chris Woakes and Jofra Archer tilted the momentum in England’s favor.
After KL Rahul’s brilliant century in the first session, England managed to claw their way back. By the end of the day, England had faced just one over in their second innings, finishing at 2/0, with opener Zak Crawley frustrating the Indian team with time-wasting tactics.
Final Session Recap
India lost Nitish Reddy early in the final session, caught behind off Ben Stokes. Ravindra Jadeja, who brought up his ninth Test half-century against England, found support in Washington Sundar as the pair worked to narrow the deficit.
Initially cautious, Jadeja and Sundar shifted gears later, mixing boundaries with quick singles to up the scoring rate. Stokes appeared visibly frustrated as his fielders misfired under pressure.
The 50-run stand came to an end when Woakes found Jadeja’s edge with a ball down leg. Woakes nearly claimed another as Akash Deep survived two LBW shouts, both overturned via DRS.
Akash Deep surprised everyone by launching Archer for a six over deep square-leg but was later dismissed by Carse, caught behind by Harry Brook.
India were eventually bowled out for 387 in 119.2 overs, matching England’s total.
India’s Middle-Session Stability
Earlier, India went into tea at 316/5. KL Rahul had notched his 10th Test ton, his second at Lord’s and fourth in England, before being dismissed by Shoaib Bashir shortly after reaching the milestone.
Jadeja and debutant Reddy stabilized the innings post-Rahul. Reddy survived a run-out scare early due to a miscommunication, but Ollie Pope’s errant throw spared him.
England suffered a setback when Bashir injured his hand while fielding a Jadeja drive and had to leave the field for treatment.
Rahul-Pant Lay the Groundwork
The morning session saw Rahul and Rishabh Pant continue their overnight partnership, aiming to erase England’s first-innings lead. Pant, battling discomfort, showed resilience to reach a half-century before being run out just before lunch.
The pair frustrated England with a 100-run stand, even sparking verbal exchanges—Pant cheekily responded to Chris Woakes’ jibe about playing for a draw with, “Just like you,” referencing England’s toned-down ‘Bazball’ approach.
With India failing to take a lead despite a solid batting display, the stage is now set for a gripping fourth day.
