The all-round efforts of Gujarat Giants’ skipper Ashleigh Gardner went in vain, as RCB, with the help of half-centuries from Ellyse Perry and Richa Ghosh, along with handy cameos from Kanika Ahuja and Raghvi Bisht, chased down the 202-run target to start their title defence in style.
Earlier, after being invited to bat first by toss winners RCB, GG got off to a steady start before Renuka Singh hit the stumps of Laura Wolvaardt (6), handing RCB their first wicket of WPL 2025. Dayalan Hemlatha (4) was then dismissed by Kanika Ahuja right after the powerplay, as the defending champions tightened their grip on GG’s batting line-up.
Beth Mooney (56) kept the runs flowing for Gujarat before she handed a straightforward catch to Smriti Mandhana off debutant Prema Rawat. New skipper Ashleigh Gardner (79 not out), along with Deandra Dottin (25), then launched a counterattack on RCB bowlers to set the stage for GG to post a big total. Simran Sheikh (11) and Harleen Deol (9 not out) also contributed with a couple of boundaries as GG finished their innings at 201 for 5 in 20 overs.
In reply, RCB lost their first wicket early as GG skipper Ashleigh Gardner trapped RCB captain Smriti Mandhana (9) in front of the wicket before cleaning up Dani Wyatt (4) in her first and second overs of the innings, pushing the defending champions on the back foot.
Ellyse Perry (57), along with Raghvi Bisht (25), added 86 runs for the third wicket before the latter was removed by Deandra Dottin, providing GG with a breakthrough. Perry followed soon after, caught at long-on by Wolvaardt off Sayali Satghare.
However, Richa Ghosh (64 not out) and Kanika Ahuja (30 not out) then added an unbeaten 93-run partnership for the fifth wicket, taking RCB home in the tournament opener with six wickets in hand and nine balls to spare.
