Seven armed assailants were killed by Pakistan's police and security forces on Wednesday after they "forcibly entered" the Gwadar Port Authority Complex, located in the province of Balochistan, and opened fire, reported Dawn, a Pakistani English-language newspaper.

A local official told Dawn that multiple blasts had been reported during the attack and clearance operations were still underway on Wednesday evening, at the time of filing this report.

Initially, a senior police official from Gwadar had told Dawn that eight attackers had been gunned down by the security forces and the exchange of fire had completely stopped. However, the count was later revised to seven assailants killed.

The Gwadar Port Authority complex is located at the centre of Gwadar city. It houses several offices related to the Gwadar Port Authority, law enforcement agencies, and staff houses.

A statement from the United Nations Department for Safety and Security reportedly said that "several explosions" and "continuous firing" had been reported during the attack on the complex.

Apart from the attackers, no casualties were reported at the time of filing.

According to Dawn, the Majeed Brigade of the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a militant separatist organisation that is proscribed in Pakistan, has claimed responsibility for the attack.
