Stock Market Highlights, Oct 01: Sensex ends flat, Nifty below 25,800; Smallcap shares shine

Stock Market Today: Indian benchmark indices, BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 settled flat on Tuesday

Stock Market Highlights, Tuesday, October 1, 2024: The benchmark equity indices, BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50, ended on a flat note with a negative bias on Tuesday. The BSE Sensex closed at 84,266.29, down 33.49 points or 0.04 per cent from its previous close. Similarly, the NSE Nifty50 settled at 25,796.90, declining 13.95 points or 0.05 per cent.

Of the Nifty50's 50 constituent stocks, 29 ended in the red, led by IndusInd Bank, ONGC, Asian Paints, Bajaj Auto, and Tata Steel, with losses of up to 2.66 per cent. Conversely, Tech Mahindra, Mahindra & Mahindra, Britannia Industries, Infosys, and Adani Enterprises posted gains of up to 2.90 per cent.

From the BSE space, IndusInd Bank, Asian Paints, Hindustan Unilever, and Tata Steel were among the top laggards of Sensex with losses extending up to 2.64 per cent. Conversely, Tech Mahindra, Mahindra & Mahindra, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Infosys were among the 14 stocks that ended in the green with gains of up to 2.93 per cent on Tuesday.

Among the broader indices, the Nifty Smallcap 100 and Nifty Midcap 100 rose 0.79 per cent and 0.34 per cent, respectively.

Nifty IT and Media indices outperformed the other sectoral indices, settling with gains of over 1 per cent each. Auto, Metal, Pharma, PSU Bank, Consumer Durables, and select Healthcare stocks managed to eke out some gains.

Triggered by the recent stimulus policies by the Chinese central bank, funds are shifting to cheaper Chinese stocks from expensive markets like India. This, along with the possible increase in interest rates by the BoJ due to recent political changes, may impact the domestic market in the near term. The recent data on the output of the key infrastructure segments and manufacturing activities is showing some fragility.

Meanwhile, OPEC’s plans to increase production are resulting in the oil prices falling. Domestically, the market awaits the upcoming RBI's policy meeting and Q2 results to have further insights on market trajectory.
