Second unit of largest nuclear power plant set to produce electricity soon

Kudankulam (Tamil Nadu), July 11 (ANI): The second unit of India's largest nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu is all set to produce electricity soon. Chairman of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India, S.

K. Sharma, said the plant attained criticality, a major step before the electricity can be generated.

The first unit of Kudankulam atomic power project, which has capacity to produce 1,000 Mega Watt of electricity, is already functional. Sharma said a series of tests would be conducted before the unit was connected to the power grid.

Sharma added that the unit would start functioning at its full capacity of producing 1,000 Mega Watt of power within three months. India is struggling to meet its surging demand for electricity and suffers from a peak-hour power deficit of about 12 percent, which has become a significant drag on the economy.
