Madhya Pradesh Revenue Minister Karan Singh Verma has said the amount of money the state government pays as compensation in cases of natural calamities has been raised to the tune of ten times - in some cases - to that of the 2002 level.The state has also also been encouraging farmers to take up sericulture. For crop losses, the non-divine silk farmers will be compensated at Rs 4,000 a hectare while that for divine silk farmers would stand at Rs 5,000 a hectare, said Verma.Small and marginal farmers, accordingly, would receive Rs 3,500 a hectare in case of 25-50 per cent losses for rain-fed farms, Rs 6,000 a hectare against irrigated crop loss, an equal amount for crop loss within six months of tilling or farming.Rs 10,000 if the crop stands for more than six months in the fields.The horticulture crop loss will also be compensated at Rs 10,000 a hectare, the minister said, adding this amount was Rs 1,000 a hectare in 2002.

The Comptroller & Auditor General of India (CAG) has pulled up the Odisha Power Generation Corporation Ltd (OPGC), a joint venture company of the Odisha government and the US based AES, for abnormal delay in procurement and blending of imported coal.The CAG, in its latest report on state PSUs for the year ended March 31 2012, said, the delay led to non-generation of additional power of 1,099 million units (MU) valued at Rs 251.82 crore.OPGC operates a 2X210 Mw power plant at Ib Valley in Jharsuguda and procures coal from Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) for generation of power, which is sold to the state-owned power trader, Gridco.In view of low calorific value of MCL coal resulting in recurring generation loss and to avert a crisis due to dropping availability of hydro power, Gridco had requested OPGC in August 2008 to procure imported coal for blending with the MCL coal and agreed to bear its impact on tariff.Accordingly, the OPGC board of directors decided in August 2008 to import
