Real Madrid are through to the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League as they defeated Manchester City 6-3 on aggregate courtesy of a hattrick by Kylian Mbappe in Madrid's 3-1 win in the 2nd leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.
What was expected to be a tight encounter in Spain, went entirely in the favour of the defending champions who showed why they have their name on the trophy a record 15 times.
While Mbappe opened the scoring early in the 4th minute with a looping placement in the bottom left corner, he doubled Madrid's lead with another great display of composure and technique, dribbling past a player inside the crowded penalty area and then slotting it in the bottom left corner of the goal again.
While City didn't stop with the attacks, Real's counter attack kept them at bay during the second half. Real's resilience paid off again as another build up play landed the ball to Mbappe who cut the ball to his left with an overstep and curled it into the bottom left corner yet again from outside the box to complete his hattrick in the 61st minute to seal the tie and a place in the round of 16 for Real Madrid
City looked completely helpless on the night with their striker Erling Haaland sat on the bench alongside Kevin de Bruyne. real also saw the return of David Alaba and Endrick back into the fray as they were subbed on for a 2-minute cameo in the end.
City did get a consolation goal though in injury time as Marmoush's freekick hit the bar and Gonzales scored on the rebound. In the end, it was a bad outing for the English club who will have to shift their focus on domestic prospects now.
