On Thursday, parliamentarians cutting across party lines opposed the Union government's move to make Aadhaar mandatory for all its beneficiary schemes. However, a review of the numbers enrolled under Aadhaar suggests the government should only make Aadhaar mandatory for receiving benefits of all its schemes in states where the coverage is 100 per cent or near complete. The data suggest that of the 36 states, only 15 have Aadhaar coverage of over 90 per cent. The Northeastern states have the lowest number of people under Aadhaar. Major states such as Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are still in the coverage range of 60 to 80 per cent. Many have also contested the Union government's claims of saving money using Aadhaar or direct benefits transfers by calling the latter's figures exaggerated.
