As the chorus of support for the protesting wrestlers grew, Delhi Police on Friday filed two FIRs against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on allegations of sexual harassment levelled by seven women wrestlers. The First Information Reports (FIRs) were filed hours after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for Delhi Police, told a Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha that a case will be registered on Friday. While the first FIR pertains to allegations of a minor wrestler and was registered under POCSO Act, the second was related to outraging modesty. Court likely to pass order on framing charges against Poonawala on Saturday

A Delhi court is likely to pronounce on Saturday its order on framing charges against Aaftab Amin Poonawala, accused of strangling his live-in partner Shraddha Walkar and chopping her body into pieces. The Delhi Police is also scheduled to file tomorrow its reply to an application of Walkar's father before the court, urging it that her remains be handed over to the family for last rites as required by tradition and culture. Additional Sessions Judge Manisha Khurana Kakkar reserved order on April 15 after hearing arguments on framing of charges from the prosecution lawyers as well as the accused. The probe agency on April 15 had sought time to file its reply to Walkar's father's application. Poonawala has been booked by Delhi Police for offences under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence). The Delhi Police filed a 6,629-page charge sheet in the case on January 24. Walkar was allegedly strangled by Poonawala on May 18 last year, following

Have sought action from Police: NCW chief on charges against WFI chief

National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma on Thursday said she has sought an action taken report from the Delhi Police Commissioner on the complaints filed by women wrestlers about alleged sexual harassment. "We are not talking to the media doesn't mean we are not doing anything about it. We have written to the commissioner of Delhi Police, asking for an action taken report. We have also asked them why they have not registered an FIR," Sharma told PTI on the sidelines of an anti-trafficking workshop here. She said the commission has received a complaint and acted on it. "There were security issues of the complainants also involved as they did not want their names to be given out. That's why we did not talk to the media about it," Sharma added. Preliminary probe needed before FIR on wrestlers' allegations: SC told

The Delhi Police on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that some kind of preliminary probe was needed before it can proceed with the registration of an FIR over sexual harassment allegations levelled by seven women wrestlers against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha was told by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Delhi Police, that if the top court felt that an FIR was to be lodged straight away, it may be done. We, prima facie feel, that there was a need to conduct a preliminary investigation before the registration of the FIR, the top law officer said. Mehta said let an impression not be created that the FIR has not been registered despite the court asking for it. The bench took note of the submissions of Mehta and said Delhi Police may put forth its views on registration of the FIR on April 24 when the plea of wrestlers will be heard. SC issues notice to Delhi Police on plea by 7 wrestlers against WFI chief

The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notices to the Delhi Police and others on a plea by seven women wrestlers seeking registration of an FIR against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over allegations of sexual harassment, saying the matter is "serious" and requires its consideration. As more political leaders including former Haryana chief minister and Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda and functionaries of some 'khap' panchayats and farmers' organisations rallied behind the country's top wrestlers protesting at Jantar Mantar here, the petition contended that despite filing complaints the Delhi Police has failed to register the FIR. The wrestlers asserted that they won't leave the protest site until Brij Bhushan, who is also a BJP MP, is arrested. They had resumed their sit-in protest on Sunday and demanded that the findings of the oversight panel that investigated the allegations be made public. The oversight committee was set up by the Sports ministry in January after the ...
