The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras here on Wednesday unveiled a new full time online course on electronic systems in alignment with the Centre's mission to make India a global hub for electronic manufacturing. The course would enable students to take up a career in various sectors including electronics, semiconductor, defence, and automotive, officials said. Noting that majority of courses offered in the country were service sector oriented, IIT-M professor electrical engineering department Andrew Thangaraj said companies like Samsung have their own equipment but avail service from other countries including India. Case against 3 BJP workers for throwing ink on education officer in MP

Police have registered a case against three BJP functionaries after they allegedly threw ink on the district education officer (DEO) of Damoh in Madhya Pradesh while accusing him of favouring a private school following a row over headscarf being part of its uniform, an official said on Wednesday. The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon when DEO SK Mishra's vehicle was moving out of the office campus. BJP's Damoh district vice president Amit Bajaj had claimed responsibility for the ink attack. The incident was condemned by Madhya Pradesh BJP unit president VD Sharma. Minor Andhra girl calls women's police helpline, gets marriage cancelled

An alert minor from Andhra Pradesh who wanted to continue her education has managed to get her own child marriage cancelled, by making a timely phone call to the women's police helpline Disha three days before the ceremony was to take place. The girl hails from Venkatapuram village of Kamavarapukota mandal in Eluru district, and the elders there had fixed the wedding for June 8 (Thursday). "The girl said she does not like marrying now as she wants to continue higher education. So she made a call to Disha SOS and wept," a press note shared by the police department on Monday said. Within five minutes of receiving the call, police from Tadikalapudi visited the minor's home. She complained that her parents had fixed her wedding against her wishes for Wednesday. The minor told the police that she had passed intermediate education, securing good marks, and would like to study at least up to graduation. Bengal govt introduces 4-year UG honours course from this academic year

The West Bengal government on Wednesday announced introduction of a four- year honours course at the undergraduate level in all government and state-aided higher educational institutions from this academic year. In a statement, the higher education department said the decision has been taken after holding talks with all stakeholders and based on the recommendation of a state-appointed expert panel which had suggested rolling out a four-year UG course from the 2023-24 academic year. "After consulting various stakeholders and keeping the future of students in mind, it has been decided by the competent authority in the State Government that the four-year UG level programme will be introduced in all Government/ Government aided/ Government sponsored Higher Education Institutions from the academic session 2023-2024..... Advertising industry's self-regulatory body ASCI on Tuesday announced tweaks in its guidelines for educational bodies' campaigns, asking them to refrain from stereotyping low scoring students as unsuccessful or failures. "While fierce pressure in education is a reality, advertising must not perpetuate this problem, normalise it or exploit student and parental vulnerability," Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) secretary general and chief executive Manisha Kapoor said. The body said it has made the changes following a consultative process, and the guidelines seek to focus on students' mental health and physical well-being. Educational institutions, including universities, colleges and schools, coaching classes and edtech platforms need to comply with the revised guidelines, as per an official statement. Reach to Teach Foundation has been given a five-year grant of Rs 5 crore by the Murty Trust -- the family foundation of Narayana Murthy and Sudha Murty. The grant is to support the Comprehensive School Transformation Programme that Reach to Teach is rolling out in the Northeast. Murty Trust has pledged support to Reach to Teach Foundation, a statement said, adding that the grant will provide seed support and strengthen Reach to Teach's ability to deliver a credible and sustainable programme. Reach to Teach primarily partnered with the education department of state governments and works closely with other stakeholders, such as parents and the larger community. CUET-UG will not make board exams redundant, says UGC Chairman Kumar

The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for admission to undergraduate programmes is not likely to make the board exams irrelevant, according to UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar. The pass percentage and number of students scoring above 90 per cent and 95 per cent in CBSE class 12 declined this year, kickstarting a debate about whether the introduction of the CUET has taken the focus off board exams and will end up making them redundant in the longer run. "The basic eligibility criterion for entrance into universities remains unchanged which is that a candidate must have passed the class 12 examination from any recognised board or equivalent. In fact, marks in grade 12 for eligibility will vary across programs and universities," Kumar told PTI. "Moreover, the board examination is an 'achievement test' whereas CUET-UG is a 'selection test'. Hence, board exams at the class 12 level are not likely to become redundant," he said. The second edition of CUET-UG is set to begin on May 21.

The Indira Gandhi National Open University on Monday began a fresh admission cycle for undergraduate, postgraduate and other programmes for the 2023-24 academic year. The last date to apply for the various programmes at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is June 30. "The July 2023 fresh admission cycle for all programmes commenced today. The last date to apply for fresh admissions for the session is June 30," a varsity official told PTI.
