Expanding India-US union for knowledge-based economy valuable: Vivek Lall

There is great merit in expanding the partnership between India and the United States towards a knowledge-based economy, a top Indian American corporate leader said on Tuesday, asserting that a successful collaboration would result in a number of joint efforts in matters of mutual interest. With India and US demographics, industrial might, and technological entrepreneurism, the two nations form a natural partnership, Vivek Lall, chief executive of the General Atomics Global Corporation, told students at the Harvard Kennedy School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. University's India Caucus, a student organisation that aims to promote India-centric discourse, had organised an interactive session on defence, innovation, and technology with Lall. He was recently honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award by US President Joe Biden. Given the shared values of India and the United States, this relationship enjoys strong bipartisan support in both the countries, and there is great merit in ...

India would be happy to discuss trade pact with US, says Piyush Goyal

India would be "happy and willing" to negotiate a trade pact with the US, provided America decides to look for a new free trade partner, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said here. He said the US administration, as a policy, is not looking at a free trade agreement (FTA) with any new partner. "Should they change their mind, India would be happy and willing to discuss. Without that also, we are engaged in attracting investment, technology, trade between the two countries," the minister told reporters here. During the Trump administration, India and the US had discussed a mini-trade deal to boost economic ties. Meanwhile, addressing the US India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), Goyal said talks for a trade deal are progressing with Canada. "Canada (Minister of International Trade Mary Ng) and I are very confident that we would be done with our early progress trade agreement by December," he said. On the proposed India-Israel agreement, the minister said: "I stil

India in advanced stage of talks with US for procurement of MQ-9B drones

India is in an advanced stage of negotiations with the US to procure 30 MQ-9B Predator armed drones at a cost of over USD 3 billion to crank up its overall surveillance apparatus along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China and in the Indian Ocean, people familiar with the development said on Sunday. The long-endurance-hunter-killer drones are being procured for the three services as they can carry out a variety of roles including maritime surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, over-the-horizon targeting and hitting stationary ground targets. The MQ-9B drone is a variant of MQ-9 "Reaper" that was reportedly used to fire a modified version of the Hellfire missile which eliminated al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in the heart of Kabul last month. Authoritative sources in the defence establishment said talks between New Delhi and Washington are underway for the government-to-government procurement of the drones manufactured by US defence major General Atomics, and rejected reports
