Body cameras for railway ticket checkers, pilot project starts in Mumbai

Railway ticket checkers are being provided body cameras with the aim to ensure transparency in the process and prevent violent and unruly behaviour on board trains, officials said. As a pilot project, the Central Railway has procured 50 such body cameras and provided them to ticket checkers in the Mumbai Division. Procured at a cost of Rs 9,000 each, these body cameras can record about 20 hours of footage. Officials say that if the pilot project in Mumbai is successful, it will be replicated across the rail network. Body cameras were first worn by police in the United Kingdom in 2005 and have since been adopted by numerous police forces and law enforcement agencies worldwide. Several police forces in India also use body cameras. "The body cameras would help maintain transparency during ticket checking and prevent misbehavior and violent acts. The initiative would also help detect any discrepancy during ticket checking, particularly in the event of complaints, and would further ...

Over the last nine years, the Indian Railways has electrified 37,011 Route Kilometres (RKM) of tracks, the national transporter said Thursday. Between India's independence and 2014, only 21,413 RKMs of railway tracks were electrified. "Out of the total route kilometers electrified, nearly 50 per cent was completed in the last five years alone. The Indian Railways has set a target to become the world's largest green railway with zero carbon emissions by 2030. Railways to start hydrogen train trials in current financial year: Lahoti

Railway Board Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti on Wednesday said work was underway on the project to develop the country's first hydrogen train and efforts were being made to start its trial in the current financial year itself. Running trains on hydrogen would be a huge "technological breakthrough" in the country, Lahoti told reporters in Indore. "The Northern Railway has already awarded the contract to develop the hydrogen train and work is underway on it," he said. Hydrogen train is a new technology at the international level and such a train is being developed for the first time in the country, hence the Indian Railways is aiming to complete the project in an efficient manner instead of setting very strict timelines for it, he said. "We want the testing of hydrogen trains to start in this financial year in the country," Lahoti said. Hydrogen train technology is still under development around the world. We will move ahead on this front as we learn this new technology, he said. Lahot

Railway Board inspects working of Kavach system between two stations

Railway Board Chairman and CEO Anil Kumar Lahoti on Sunday inspected the working of KAVACH-- an indigenous Automatic Train Protection system -- between Lingampalli and Chitgidaa stations in Telangana. Lahoti travelled in one of the locomotives as part of the first-hand demonstration. The locomotives are equipped with KAVACH systems and he observed how the system automatically regulates the speed of the train while passing through the loop lines, how the whistling automatically happens while passing through the level crossing gates and how the system prevents the train from passing the signal at danger (SPAD), a release from South Central Railways (SCR) said here. He also oversaw how the KAVACH systems on the rolling stock helps in avoiding the train collisions either rear collision or head-on collision with the systems automatically applying brakes without the need for human intervention.
