But this time he will not be playing because he does not want to be there. Nicklaus missed the deadline for entering the US Senior Open last week and still doesn't know whether he will play the remainder of the 2004 season.
"Whether it was the US Open or the US Senior Open, they have always been among the most significant championships to me. I just felt that I didn't want to play," he said.
Nicklaus' last tournament was the Memorial, where he shot 1-under 71 on the final day and tied for 63rd. He has played only six tournaments this year, four of them on the Champions Tour.
Wie knocked out
Teenage golf star Michelle Wie went through a tough 36 holes in two-under par 142 at the US Men's Public Amateur Links qualifying at Manada Golf Course in Hershey. That meant her wish to qualify for the 2005 Masters came to an end.
The only female in the field, Wie, 14, trailed David Bradshaw and Alex Knoll, both four-under 140, by two strokes. Bradshaw and Knoll advanced to the 156-man July Publinx in Minnesota, from where the top 64 players advance to the next stage.
Had Wie been in top two, she would have been invited to the Minnesota event as one of two southeastern Pennsylvania representatives. The 64 players will next be in a match-play event from where the winner will make it to the Masters. But Wie still has the 2004 US Women's Open to look forward to, to be held from July 1 to 4 .
Maggert's dilemma
The PGA Championship is not only a Major but is also the last chance to make the Ryder Cup team. But Jeff Maggert, who won the PGA Championships in 1997 to clinch a spot on the Ryder Cup team, is not likely to take that route this year. Maggert's wife, Michelle, is likely to give birth in the week of the PGA Championship.
"The PGA is not looking good on my schedule at this point," Maggert said. So Maggert must make some big moves soon, as he did with a third place finish in the US Open to move up to No 10 in standing. Bogeyman
