The Andhra Pradesh Technology Development and Promotion Centre (APDTC) has so far facilitated the filing of 26 products from the state

The Andhra Pradesh Technology Development and Promotion Centre (APTDC), an autonomous body promoted by the Andhra Pradesh government, Confederation of the Indian Industry (CII) and the central government’s department of science and technology, has added two more products to the list of its geographical identification (GI) filings this year.

“The products are from Visakhapatnam and Warangal regions. It will take another two to three years for the GI Registry in Chennai to grant the GI tag to them,” S Jyothi Kumar, director and head (APTDC), said on the sidelines of a seminar on the European patent system organised by the CII in Hyderabad on Monday.

APDTC, the nodal agency which facilitates commercialisation of innovative products, has so far facilitated the filing of 26 products from AP, of which 20 have obtained the GI tag.

Stating that there were 5,000 products from India  that were yet to be tapped for GI registration, Kumar said around 550 GI applications had been filed from India, including 100 from Europe. Around 50 per cent of these were GI-registered, he added.

“We are currently studying 40-50 products from Andhra Pradesh, including Bandar laddu, Nizamabad turmeric, for possible filings,” he said.
