Hindalco has posted a marginal rise in net profit for the first quarter of the current year at Rs 195.3 crore against Rs 193 crore in the corresponding period of the last year. Net sales, during the period, went up 44 per cent to Rs 1,673.3 crore (Rs 1,159.8 crore).
 
The company's rise in net sales was not translated into increase in net profit due to reduction in other income and increase in expenditure as well as depreciation.
 
Other income came down to Rs 45.9 crore (Rs 71.0 crore) while expenditure went up to Rs 1300.3 crore (Rs 827.7 crore). Deprecation rose to Rs 86.6 crore (Rs 71.7 crore). Gross profit at the end of the April-June quarter, 2004 stood at Rs 379.1 crore (Rs 358 crore).
 
The aluminium division contributed Rs 774.4 crore (Rs 664.7 crore) to the company's revenue. Net sales of the copper business stood at Rs 900.8 crore (Rs 495.1 crore).
