Rajkot-based Power Engineering Corporation Limited, a diesel oil engine manufacturing company, has developed a bio diesel engine. The product has been developed after the company received a certification from Bhavnagar-based Central Salt and Marine Chemical Research Institute (CSMCRI).

"We took up the opportunity offered by CSMCRI and after two years research work we developed this bio diesel engine. While the concept is still new in India and lacks awareness, our products are already being exported to countries like the US, the UK, Australia and Germany," said Atul Patel, partner of Power Engineering Corporation.

"Most of the researches of bio fuel are on paper and not much practical work has been done. Moreover, there is no proper infrastructure for development of such engines in India," said Patel. The engine is mainly used for agricultural purpose in India and abroad.

According to Patel, the product is also used for power generation but not as extensively as other sources of power generation.

Initiated by central government, CSMCRI, which was set up to conduct research on production and utilization of salt, went on to develop itself into a multi-disciplinary research institute with a blend of scientists and technologists having specializations in chemistry, biology and engineering sciences.

Established since 1976, Power Engineering Corporation has become a global supplier to large customer base in diesel engines and its spare parts, rubber components, small automobile and engineering components.

The company produces around 1,500-2,000 diesel oil engines every year. A 100 percent export oriented unit, Power Engineering exports about 200 bio diesel oil engine to countries like the US, the UK, Germany, Sweden, Newzilend, Australia and many other European Union (EU) countries per annum.

Having registered a turnover of Rs 3 crore, the company expects to grow by 10 per cent per annum. Recently, Power Engineering Corporation tied up with Germany and UK based companies for more research work on bio diesel engine.
