Short-haul trips in demand on the Easter weekend

Industry sees 7-12% rise in bookings for weekend trips

Tour operators have witnessed  a growth in demand for  short haul tours  with beach destinations including Maldives and Phuket attracting leisure travellers around Easter weekend.

Jatinder Paul Singh, senior vice president, Thomas Cook said the company has witnessed 25 percent growth in outbound bookings this season with growth coming from both metros and non metros.  Sales queries have increased  32 percent, he added.

Overall industry wide there is a 7-12 percent rise in bookings for weekend trips, a travel industry executive said.

"Flight Shop has seen a demand for short-haul beach vacations  destinations like Maldives and Sri Lanka. The relaxed visa norms make these locations a favourite among last-minute travel planners," said Vicki Parris, National Brand Leader India, Flight Shop.

Vishal Suri, CEO (tour operating) Kuoni said the company had designed "zero planning" weekend holiday packages to Maldives, Seychelles, Phuket, Bali and Hong Kong.

Within India hill stations are popular for weekend trips, according to online portal MakeMyTrip.

"Most travellers are heading to the hills and  bookings to Ooty, Nainital, Lansdowne (Uttarakhand) and Corbett have more than doubled," said Mohit Gupta – head, online business, MakeMyTrip.com.

"We have seen a huge spike in flight and hotel bookings, and both are being driven through mobile devices," Gupta added.
