Two-wheeler dispatches rose in December for most manufacturers, even as retail sales were muted, according to sales data reported by companies. Cumulative sales of top-five manufacturers Hero MotoCorp, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India, TVS Motor, Bajaj Auto and Royal Enfield rose year-on-year by 7.6 per cent to 1,060,427 units. The year-on-year increase also came on back of last year’s low base. Total two-wheeler sales declined 16 per cent in December 2019. With most manufacturers having hiked prices following a steep rise in commodity prices, demand for motorcycles and scooters is expected to take a beating.

The top two manufacturers however, are optimistic of the road ahead. “The December volumes indicate the continuously improving consumer sentiment and the company expects the positive trend to continue in the New Year, despite challenges posed by Covid-19 pandemic,” Hero said in a statement.

Yadvinder Singh Guleria, Director–Sales and Marketing, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India, said, “After the positive retail and wholesale traction in December 2020, we enter 2021 with new hope. The third quarter marked the first quarter of positive sales after a long time.” The next two quarters too, are expected to show some growth due to the low base effect but real positive growth and market expansion may take some time, he added.
