Mumbai's active tally dips below 5,000

Mumbai on Saturday reported 346 fresh COVID-19 cases and nine deaths, taking the tally to 7,34,781 and the toll to 15,889, in the process bringing down the active caseload of the metropolis below 5,000 after a long time, a civic official said.

 

The number of active cases stood at 4,972 on Saturday, as the recovery count reached 7,11,517 after 444 people were discharged, he said.

 

Saturday was also the 16th day in a row when the daily addition of cases was less than 500, though the fatality count during this period continued to be in the 5-14 range, he pointed out.

Centre reviews Covid Situation in 10 states showing an upsurge in cases

Rajesh Bhushan, Union Health Secretary, chaired a high-level meeting today to review the Covid situation in 10 states of Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Assam, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Andhra Pradesh and Manipur. The public health measures taken for surveillance, containment and management of Covid by the health authorities in these states were also reviewed. These states are either reporting a rise in new daily Covid cases or a rise in positivity rate.

All districts reporting positivity rate more than 10% in the last few weeks need to consider strict restrictions to prevent/curtail movement of people, formation of crowds and intermingling of people to prevent spread of infection, said Centre.

West African health officials race to vaccinate amid spikes

A resurgence of coronavirus cases in West Africa is hitting the region hard, inundating cemeteries where funeral numbers are rising and hospitals where beds are becoming scarce.

 

Those visible shifts are also pushing a reluctant population to seek out the vaccines in larger numbers at a time when shipments of doses are arriving from multiple sources after nearly grinding to a halt in recent months.

 

Thousands of new COVID-19 cases have been reported in the region in the past few weeks amid low vaccination rates and the spread of the delta variant, with some countries seeing their highest numbers since the pandemic began.

Pondy adds 100 coronavirus cases, 2 deaths reported

Puducherry registered 100 fresh cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, raising the overall tally to 1,20,915.

 

The new cases were identified at the end of examination of 5,082 samples.

 

Puducherry region accounted for 67 new cases out of the total 100 followed by Karaikal 20, Mahe 12 and Yanam one.

 

Two more persons succumbed to the viral infection pushing the toll to 1,795.

21 new Covid-19 cases reported, no athletes among them

Twenty one new Covid-19 cases related to the Olympics were reported by the organisers on Saturday, none of them athletes, amid surging infections in the host city.

 

Out of the total new cases, 14 were contractors and seven Games-linked officials. Sixteen are residents of Japan and five from overseas.

 

None of them were staying in the Olympic village, the organising committee said.

 

The cumulative Covid-19 cases related to the Games now stand at 241.

Over 31.4 mn balance Covid-19 doses available with states, pvt hospitals: Centre

More than 31.4 million balance and unutilised COVID-19 vaccine doses are still available with the states, union territories and private hospitals to be administered, the Union Health Ministry said on Saturday.

 

Over 487.8 million vaccine doses have been provided to states and UTs so far through all sources and further 6,857,590 doses are in the pipeline.

150 people take part in religious process in Gujarat; DJ operator among 3 booked

Around 150 people participated in a religious procession in Surendranagar district of Gujarat in violation of the coronavirus norms, following which police have registered an offence against two organisers of the event and a disc jockey (DJ) operator, an official said on Saturday.

 

The procession was taken out in Patdi town of the district on Friday afternoon, he said.

Arunachal Pradesh reports 379 new COVID-19 cases, one fresh death

Arunachal Pradesh's COVID-19 tally rose to 47,856 as 379 more people tested positive for the infection, a senior health official said here on Saturday.

 

The COVID-19 death toll in the frontier state increased to 226 with one more person succumbing to the infection on Thursday, State Surveillance Officer (SSO) Dr Lobsang Jampa said.

 

Of the fresh cases, the Capital Complex Region registered the highest number at 112, followed by Lower Subansiri (35), Changlang (33), Papumpare (28), Lohit and West Kameng at 18 each, Upper Subansiri, West Siang and Namsai at 15 each and East Siang (14), the official said.

70% Belgian adults fully vaccinated against Covid

Seventy per cent of adults in Belgium, roughly 6.5 million people, have now been fully vaccinated against Covid-19, the Sciensano institute for public health said.

 

In Wallonia, Brussels and the country's German-speaking community, the percentages of fully vaccinated adults are 69, 53 and 68, respectively, compared to 73 per cent in Flanders, reports Xinhua news agency citing the institute as saying on Friday.

 

Meanwhile, the Federal Agency for Medicines and Health Products (FAMHP) has received 24,943 reports of adverse reactions to the vaccines administered.

Andaman & Nicobar reports single Covid-19 case

The union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands reported only a single COVID-19 case in the last 24 hours, pushing the tally to 7,535, a health official said on Saturday.

 

The archipelago now has eight active COVID-19 cases and all the eight patients are in the South Andaman district. The other two districts - North and Middle Andaman and Nicobar - are now COVID-19 free as both don't have any active case, the official said.

 

Three more persons recuperated from the disease in the last 24 hours taking the total number of COVID-19 recoveries to 7,398, he said.

Australia’s Brisbane joins Sydney in lockdown as virus spreads

Brisbane joined Australia’s biggest city of Sydney in lockdown after the discovery of six new cases of the delta variant of the coronavirus in Queensland’s state capital.

 

In Sydney, the epicenter of the county’s outbreak, there were 210 new locally acquired infections in the 24 hours to 8 p.m. on Friday, state health authorities said.

Tokyo Olympics: 21 more Games-related coronavirus infections reported

The Tokyo Olympics organising committee on Saturday confirmed 21 more COVID-19 cases related to the Games.

 

As per Kyodo News, none of them are athletes. The 21 new infections has taken the total Games-related infections to 241.

 

Of the daily total, 14 were contractors and seven games-linked officials, confirmed the Tokyo Olympics organising committee.

 

The figures of the committee do not include those announced by central and local governments in Japan.

Australian leaders reach vax targets for roadmap out of pandemic

Australian leaders have reached an agreement on vaccination targets required for the country's roadmap out of the Covid-19 pandemic.

 

Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced on Friday night that the National Cabinet, which is composed of him and state and territory leaders, has "agreed in principle" to the roadmap that will see Australia eventually treat Covid-19 like any other infectious disease, reports Xinhua news agency.

 

The National Cabinet agreed that Australia will move to the second phase of the plan, under which vaccinated people will be subject to fewer restrictions and lockdowns unlikely but possible and targeted, when 70 per cent of the adult population is fully inoculated against the virus.

Argentina sees 13,483 new Covid-19 cases, 474 deaths

Argentina on Friday reported 13,483 new COVID-19 infections and 474 more deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the cumulative total to 4,919,408 cases and 105,586 deaths.

 

According to the ministry of health, 4,557,037 people have recovered from the disease while 256,785 cases are still in the active stage.

 

In total, "64 per cent of people detected to have the Delta variant entered (Argentina) with a negative COVID-19 PCR test, but presented symptoms several days after their arrival," said Florencia Carignano, national director of migration.

India records 41,649 fresh cases, 593 more fatalities

With a single-day rise of 41,649 new cases, India's Covid-19 tally climbed to 31,613,993 on Saturday, while the death toll due to the viral disease shot up to 423,810 with 593 more people succumbing to it, the Union health ministry said.

 

The number of active coronavirus cases in the country registered an increase for the fourth consecutive day, according to the ministry's data updated at 8 am.

 

The number of active cases has gone up to 408920, accounting for 1.29 per cent of the total number of cases, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate was recorded at 97.37 per cent, the data showed.

 

An increase of 3,765 cases was recorded in the active Covid-19 tally in a span of 24 hours.

 

The daily positivity rate was recorded at 2.34 per cent. The weekly positivity rate was recorded at 2.42 per cent, according to the ministry.

China reports 55 new Covid-19 cases as Delta variant spreads in Nanjing

China reported on Saturday 55 new coronavirus cases in the mainland for July 30, compared with 64 cases a day earlier, the health authority said.

 

The National Health Commission said in a statement 25 of the new infections were local cases, compared with 21 the previous day. There were no new deaths.

 

A majority of the local cases were reported in Jiangsu province, the authority said.

Global Covid-19 caseload tops 197.2 mn, deaths surge to more than 4.20 mn

The overall global Covid-19 caseload has topped 197.2 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 4.20 million and vaccinations soared to over 4.04 billion, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

 

In its latest update on Saturday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload, death toll stood and vaccination tally stood at 197,276,917, 4,207,236 and 4,042,614,173, respectively.

 

The US continues to be the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 34,943,203 and 613,006, respectively, according to the CSSE.

 

In terms of infections, India follows in the second place with 31,572,344 cases.

 

The other worst countries with over 3 million cases are Brazil (19,880,273), France (6,166,592), Russia (6,161,985), the UK (5,857,558), Turkey (5,704,713), Argentina (4,919,408), Colombia (4,776,291), Spain (4,447,044), Italy (4,343,519), Iran (3,851,162), Germany (3,774,918) and Indonesia (3,372,374), the CSSE figures showed.

Canada faces start of Delta-driven 4th wave of Covid-19: Top doctor

Canada is at the start of the Delta-driven fourth wave of Covid-19, Canada's Chief Public Health Officer Theresa Tam said on Friday.

 

"The updated longer-range forecast shows how the epidemic trajectory may evolve through early September. It suggests that we are at the start of the Delta-driven fourth wave, but that the trajectory will depend on ongoing increases in fully vaccinated coverage, and the timing, pace and extent of reopening," Tam said at a press conference in Ottawa.

 

"I think we are in a slightly precarious period at the moment, in between these people trying to get the vaccines in and reopening," she said.
