Goa extends coronavirus curfew till July 26

The Goa government on Sunday extended the coronavirus-induced curfew till July 26.

 

The restrictions on movement and businesses, termed by the government as curfew, were first imposed on May 9 and extended from time to time.

Maharashtra sees 9,000 new cases, 180 deaths in a day

Maharashtra on Sunday reported 9,000 fresh COVID-19 cases and 180 fatalities, taking the tally of infections to 62,14,190 and the toll to 1,27,031, the state health department said.

 

With 5,756 patients getting discharged during the day, the count of recoveries in Maharashtra rose to 59,80,350 so far, leaving the state with 1,03,486 active cases, it said.

Karnataka to allows movie theatres, reduces night curfew by an hour

Karnataka on Sunday announced it will allow cinemas to open and reduce the duration of night curfew by one hour from July 19. Higher educational institutions, like colleges and universities, will resume from July 26. The government relaxed restrictions after the Covid cases came down, PTI reported.

CII proposes 'pandemic pool' of financial resources

An industry association on Sunday proposed setting up a "pandemic pool" which will have initial financial support from the government for long-term risk management. "Even though initially, fiscal support from the central government is required for the successful start of the pool, the government support can gradually reduce to near zero levels, as the pool becomes self-sufficient with accumulated surpluses over a period of 12-15 years," said the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), according to PTI.

Two foreign athletes tested positive for Covid-19 at the Tokyo Olympic Village, the first cases reported among competitors at the village, according to a document from Tokyo’s Olympic organizing committee on Sunday, Bloomberg reported. The games, which start July 23, will be the first to be held without spectators as Tokyo grapples with a surge in coronavirus cases that prompted the government to declare a fourth state of emergency in the capital earlier this month. The city reported 1,410 new infections on Saturday, the most since Jan. 21. There are 55 positive cases so far tied to the Tokyo Games.

Maharashtra's Thane reports more cases, deaths
