Police busts LeT module in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri, arrests 3 including kingpin

The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday claimed to have busted a module of terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba, tasked with carrying out blasts in crowded places and to target security vehicles, with the arrest of three people.

Deputy Inspector General of Police, Rajouri, Haseeb Mughal said the module was busted after an investigation was launched following the recovery of sophisticated improvised explosive devices (IEDs), having pressure and timer mechanisms, in the district.

"The IEDs were smuggled from across the border to set off explosions at crowded public places and target security vehicles and camps. The arrest of the trio, including the kingpin, prevented nefarious designs of the terror handlers (from being executed)," Mughal told reporters in Rajouri, PTI reported.

Chilly winds swept the national capital and kept the mercury down on Wednesday. The national capital recorded a high of 21.6 degrees Celsius, a notch below the season's average. The humidity level oscillated between 53 per cent and 100 per cent.

 

Delhi witnessed windy morning with the minimum temperature settling at 8.6 degrees Celsius — a normal for this time of the year.

 

According to the Ministry of Earth Sciences' air quality monitor SAFAR, the air quality will remain 'moderate' or the 'lower end of poor' for the next two days.

2 polish nationals killed in massive snow avalanche in Kashmir's Gulmarg

Two polish nationals lost their lives to a massive avalanche that hit the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir's ski resort Gulmarg on Wednesday. 21 skiers trapped by the avalanche were rescued from the slopes.

 

Snow avalanches are frequent in higher reaches of Kashmir during the months of January and February, especially after fresh snowfall. Kashmir received heavy snowfall on January 29 and 30.

Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren announces compensation of Rs 4 lakhs for Dhanbad fire victims' family

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Wednesday, announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakhs for the family members of those who died in the Dhanbad fire incident that killed 14 people.

"The state government has directed to give a compensation amount of Rs 4 lakh rupees to the family members of the people who died in Dhanbad's Ashirwad apartment and other accidents in the past. Instructions have also been given to the district administration to provide proper treatment and other facilities to the people injured in the accident," Soren tweeted.

WhatsApp bans over 3.6 million 'bad' accounts in India in December

Meta-owned WhatsApp on Wednesday said it banned over 36 lakh malicious accounts in India in the month of December 2022 in compliance with the new IT Rules 2021, which are being amended to put more responsibilities on social media platforms.

 

The messaging platform, which has more than 400 million users in the country, received 1,607 complaint reports in December in the country, and the records 'actioned' were 166.
