Saddened by loss of lives in the Indonesia earthquake, says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed grief over the loss of lives and damage to property from the earthquake that jolted the Indonesian island of Java.

"Saddened by the loss of lives and damage to property from the earthquake in Indonesia. Deepest condolences to the victims and their families. Wish a speedy recovery to the injured. India stands with Indonesia in this hour of grief," PM Modi tweeted.

At least 162 people died in a powerful earthquake that rattled Indonesia's main island of Java on Monday. The rescuers are searching for survivors trapped under the rubble amid a series of aftershocks, Al Jazeera reported.

India-UK trade pact high priority; next round of talks slated in December: Goyal

The proposed free trade agreement (FTA) between India and the UK is a high priority for both the countries and the next round of negotiations for the pact is slated to happen next month, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said on Tuesday.

He said that things are progressing well and it will yield good results.

"We are all very well aware that it was progressing very fast until we had a little bit of a blip because of political happenings in the other country. Fortunately, we have a stable government. I believe in office now (in the UK) and I am already in touch with my (UK) counterpart. We are working together to possibly have an in person meeting also very soon but our teams are already engaged. Next month, the next round of negotiations are slated to happen," Goyal said here at a steel industry event.

Delhi HC dismisses plea to transfer Shraddha Walkar murder case to CBI

Terming it a 'publicity interest litigation', the Delhi High Court on Tuesday dismissed with costs a PIL seeking directions for the Shraddha Walkar murder investigation to be transferred from Delhi Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The court, however, did not specify the cost amount.

A bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad said it was a publicity interest litigation and not a single ground was made out.

Kejriwal should apologise to nation, dismiss Jain: BJP on massage video

The BJP demanded on Tuesday that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal should apologise to the nation and dismiss his jailed minister Satyendar Jain over fresh allegations related to a massage video.

The tirade came after sources claimed that the masseur, who was seen in video footage giving a massage to Jain, was not a physiotherapist, but an inmate who is lodged in the Tihar Jail in a rape case.

The Aam Aadmi Party, which received flak over the videos, had asserted earlier that Jain was receiving physiotherapy in the jail, where he is in judicial custody for the past five months over money-laundering charges.

4.2 magnitude earthquake hits Ladakh's Kargil, no casualties reported

A 4.3 magnitude earthquake hit Ladakh's Kargil district on Tuesday, the National Centre for Seismology said. There were no reports of casualties or damage to property.

The epicentre of the tremor, recorded at 10.05 am, was 191 kilometers north of Kargil, the NCS said.

The quake in the earthquake prone Himalayan region was at a latitude of 36.27 degrees north and longitude of 76.26 degrees east at a depth of 10 km, it said.

Australia approves FTA with India; to implement on mutually agreed date

India and Australia would now implement the free trade agreement on a mutually agreed date as the Australian Parliament on Tuesday approved the pact between the two countries, an official said on Tuesday.
 

"BREAKING: Our Free Trade Agreement with India has passed through parliament," Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a tweet.
 

The India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA) needed ratification by the Australian parliament before its implementation. In India, such pacts are approved by the Union Cabinet.

The government is preparing a 'coking coal mission' to diversify the sources of key steel making raw material, for which the country is heavily dependent on imports, according to Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.

The mission is part of the government's efforts to reduce dependence on imports for coking coal and increase use of locally available coal in the steel making through gasification process, the steel minister told PTI in an interview.

UP govt to present supplementary FY23 budget for state on Dec 5

The Uttar Pradesh government will present its supplementary budget for the current financial year 2022-23 on the first day of the winter session of the Assembly on December 5, informed sources on Tuesday.

According to sources, the State Assembly will commence on December 5 for three days, the agenda of which is yet to be finalised.

"A number of schemes are likely to be announced through the budget. The supplementary budget will be discussed on December 6. Some bills will be passed along with the budget on December 7," the sources said.

"The budget will be brought for Global Investors Summit, tablet smartphone distribution and other items," the sources added.

Ministers' panel may recommend 28% GST on online gaming, tweak in calculation method

The panel of state finance ministers is likely to recommend a uniform GST levy of 28 per cent on online gaming irrespective of whether it is a game of skill or game of chance, sources said.

However, it is likely to suggest a revised formula for calculating the amount on which the Goods and Services Tax (GST) would be levied.

Currently, online gaming attracts 18 per cent GST. The tax is levied on gross gaming revenue, which is the fees charged by online gaming portals.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will discuss defence cooperation and ways to further strengthen mutually beneficial engagements with his counterparts from ASEAN countries during his visit to Cambodia starting Tuesday, the ANI reported.

Mumbai reports 24 fresh measles cases and one suspected death: BMC

Mumbai reported 24 new confirmed cases of measles, while a one-year girl from suburban Govandi is suspected to have died of the viral infection, the city civic body said.

The tally of measles cases in the city since January 1 this year has risen to 208, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.

The death toll due to measles since the beginning of this year remained unchanged at eight, while the death in Govandi is being probed.
