Use of signal jamming device generally illegal: Communications ministry

The use of cellular signal jammer, GPS blocker or other signal jamming device is generally illegal, except specifically permitted by the Govt of India. Private sector organisations and/or private individuals can't procure/use jammers in India, the Ministry of Communications said while issuing an advisory. The communications ministry added, "It has also been stated that it is unlawful to advertise, sell, distribute, import or otherwise market signal jamming devices in India, except as permitted under the guidelines mentioned above."

"With regards to signal booster/ epeater it has been stated that it is unlawful to possess, sale, and/ or use mobile signal repeater/ booster by any individual/ entity other than the licensed Telecom Service Providers," the ministry said.

Supreme Court to hear pleas challenging Agnipath scheme next week

The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to list next week, subject to the Chief Justice's approval, petitions challenging the Central government's Agnipath scheme to induct youth into all three-armed forces divisions.

 

A counsel mentioned the petition before a vacation bench comprising Justices Indira Banerjee and J.K. Maheshwari.

 

The counsel representing the armed forces aspirants sought urgent hearing in the matter and added that the scheme should not be made applicable to those who are already undergoing the selection process. She further contended that the matter was urgent, as the career of several aspirants was at stake and pointed out that implementation of the scheme will cut short the tenure of the aspirants to 4 years from 20 years. The counsel said despite several mentionings, the registry has not given a specific date and urged the top court to give a date for hearing on the matter.

Govt to withdraw windfall tax only if oil prices fall to $40 per barrel from current levels: Revenue Secretary

India will only withdraw its windfall tax introduced last week for oil producers and refiners if global prices of crude fall as much as $40 a barrel from present levels, Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj told Reuters on Monday.

 

The tax on firms that have increased product exports to gain from higher overseas margins took effect on July 1, as the government moves to boost domestic supply and revenue.

 

The taxes, and some accompanying export curbs, will hit the earnings of companies such as Reliance Industries, Nayara Energy, which is partly owned by Russia's Rosneft , the Oil and Natural Gas Corp, Oil India Ltd and Vedanta Ltd.

 

"The taxation would be reviewed every 15 days," Bajaj said, adding that it would depend on international crude prices. "If crude prices fall, then windfall gains will cease and windfall taxes would also be removed."
 

The government believes such windfall gains will cease once prices fall $40 from existing levels, Bajaj said.

16 people, including some school children, were killed on Monday after a  bus fell into a gorge in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu district, a senior official said.

Kullu Deputy Commissioner Ashutosh Garg said the Sainj bound bus fell into the gorge near Jangla village at around 8.30 am.
