Finance Minister P Chidambaram was today moved as home minister and National Security Advisor M K Narayanan offered to resign from his post in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and state Home Minister RR Patil have been put on notice. The Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) chiefs are likely to be replaced, though they retire on 31 December.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is likely to handle the Finance portfolio himself for the moment, adding to the three others he is already holding: Coal, Environment and Forests, and Information and Broadcasting.
All the indications are that intelligence agencies, in addition to reporting to the PM will now also brief the new home minister.
