Sudden climatic changes across Gujarat are likely to affect mango crop in the state. Also, crops of cumin seed (jeera) might have a moderate impact following moisture in the atmosphere. Other crops such as rape seed and wheat may also get damaged if unseasonal rains lash the state.

"At present, the crop of Kesar variety of mango is poised for maximum damage. Cloudy weather is likely to affect the standing crop of cumin seed," said Kikani, vice-chancellor, Junagadh Agriculture University.

Increased moisture leads to dropping of fruits from mango trees, said Ajit Desai, chairman and managing director of Desai Fruits, one of the largest exporters of fruits from Gujarat. In the past too, mango crop was damaged due to unseasonal rains in the state.

"Change in weather is also likely to impact the standing crops of cumin seed and psyllium. Crops such as rapeseed and wheat could also get affected if unseasonal rains lash the state," said RA Serasia, state director of agriculture.

Cloudy weather increases moisture, which is likely to impact cumin seed crop moderately as the crops require dry weather. However, the impact on cumin seed crop may not be substantial as nearly 75 per cent of the total cumin seed production in the state had arrived into the markets, said traders. But, it is likely to impact the quality of cumin seed crop that is standing in the farms, traders said.

According to them, the situation in neighbouring Rajasthan may get worse if cloudy weather persists for a few more days.

"Around 75 per cent of cumin seed crop in Rajasthan is still standing in the farms and only 25 per cent has reached the markets," they said.
