The Department of Posts (DoP), which recently undertook verification of mobile subscribers on behalf of service providers at Rs 25 per customer, is eyeing a revenue of Rs 500 crore in the current fiscal through this move.

The DoP also launched a premium Speed Post service between Mumbai and Delhi, which will deliver mails before noon the next day.

"This service will then be extended to other cities like Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore. It is offered at a rate of Rs 100 for 200 grams," DoP secretary U Srinivasa Raghavan said.

Raghavan added that Speed Post continued to be the market leader in the express industry with a market share of 10 per cent during 2005-06 while revenue from this service had already crossed Rs 408 crores and in the current year were expected to go beyond Rs 500 crore in this fiscal.

The DoP's deficit, which has been hovering around Rs 1,400 crore for the last couple of years, has now fallen below Rs 1,000 crore, mainly due to improved management and implementation of several initiatives.
