The Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) has taken a strong exception to the Centre's proposal to enhance the ceiling for professional tax from the present level of Rs 2,500 to Rs 7,500 per annum.

According to a press release, when the Karnataka government in 2003 started levying professional tax of Rs 2,500 through an amendment, FKCCI and its affiliated associations had strongly opposed the amendment.

Expressing shock over the Centre's proposal, FKCCI has announced that "it will further burden the salaried class as well as the business community."

FKCCI on behalf of its affiliated trade and industry members, has requested the Centre to reconsider the matter and withdraw the proposal, it added.
