Govt promoting use of urban waste

The government today said it was promoting the use of urban waste such as sewage gas and cattle dung besides those emanating from vegetable markets and slaughter-houses for generating power.

"We are implementing the programme on 'Energy Recovery from Urban Wastes' which aims at promoting setting up of biomethanation projects for recovery of energy from urban wastes such as sewage and cattle dung," New and Renewable Energy Minister Farooq Abdullah said in written reply in Lok Sabha.

He said the government was looking at creating a conducive environment for the programme through fiscal and financial regimes.

Answering another query on the potential of tidal energy in the country, Abdullah said, "There is an estimated potential of tidal energy to the order of 8,000 Mw in the country. This includes about 7,000 Mw in the Gulf of Cambay and 1,200 Mw in the Gulf of Kutch in Gujarat and about 100 Mw in Gangetic delta in the Sundarbans region."
