Odisha plans 7,700 new MSMEs with Rs 770 crore investment

The new units will create employment for 62,200 persons

The state government has drawn up a plan for promoting establishment of 7,700 new MSMEs (micro, small & medium enterprises) in this fiscal. The setting up of these new units is estimated to cost Rs 770 crore.

The new units after commencement of operations, would create employment for 62,200 persons. A reply by MSME minister Jogendra Behera to an assembly question stated 130,301 MSME units have been established in the state by the end of 2013-14. An investment of Rs 5,619.69 crore has gone into these units with their combined annual turnover exceeding Rs 13,000 crore.

Among the MSMEs, food and allied industries leads the pack with an investment of around Rs 1,349.93 crore. There are about 26,498 food and allied units in the state that have generated 142,016 jobs. This is followed by repairing and servicing industry with an investment of about Rs 966.23 crore. In toto, the MSMEs in the state have provided employment opportunities for 706,342 persons.

Odisha is among the 10 leading states in the country in terms of employment generated by the MSME sector, according to Union ministry of MSME’s annual report for 2012-13.

As many as 3.32 million people are employed in the MSME sector in the state. The state government has unveiled a Rs 1,600-crore investment plan aimed at creation of 32,000 new units in the MSME sector in the 12th Plan period (2012-17).
