Tamil Nadu deputy chief minister MK Stalin laid the foundation stones for projects worth Rs 92.60 crore in Salem district on Monday. These include setting up of Samathuvapurams, a statewide housing project, and various urban development projects.

Stalin said the government had allocated funds to set up 29 Samathuvapurams in 2008-09, of which so far nine had been opened. For 2009-10, the government had allocated around Rs 75 crore to open another 30 Samathuvapurams. The remaining 36 will be opened  in 2010-11. Loans worth around Rs 5,338 crore have been disbursed to around 406,000 women self-help groups in Tamil Nadu, he added.
