To tide over prevailing power crisis in Uttar Pradesh, the Akhilesh Yadav led state government has proposed to add over 33,000 Mw to its total generation capacity in the current 12 th Five Year Plan (2012-17).
Of the total 33,602 Mw, the state sector would add 5,300 Mw, central sector 3,245 Mw and private sector 22,232 Mw. Besides, 2,825 Mw has been proposed to be added by other mega power projects.
This was informed by senior state cabinet minister Shiv Pal Singh Yadav on floor of the state legislative council.
He said the government had recently renewed 10 memorandum of understandings (MoU) with private companies in the power sector and the process was underway to bring notable changes on power front in the next two months.
Yadav further informed that during the months of March and April 2012, the average power demand in UP was about 10,208 Mw, against which the total supply stood at 8,317 Mw and 8,417 Mw respectively. During these two months, the rural areas were supplied over 12 hrs of power. The previous Mayawati regime also had planned for adding 25,000 Mw to the state generation capacity during the 12 th Plan, mainly with the help of private sector.
Currently, the total generation capacity of UP stands at around 3,000 Mw and the demand routinely touches 12,000 Mw. The total supply remains around 10,000 Mw with heavy import from the central sector and buying from energy exchange.
