The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved appointment of Arvind Virmani, chief economic adviser (CEA), department of economic affairs, as executive director in the International Monetary Fund (IMF), said a government notification.
Virmani, whose two-year tenure as CEA was extended by three months in July, will replace Adarsh Kishore. Virmani was tipped to be in the race for the deputy governorship of the Reserve Bank of India, a position that had fallen vacant after the exit of Rakesh Mohan. Vrimani, who holds a doctorate in economics from the Harvard University, was principal advisor in the Planning Commission prior to joining the finance ministry.
