Gurugram to have first woman police chief from Tuesday

The Millennium City is all set to have its first woman police chief from Tuesday when 1994-batch, Haryana-cadre IPS officer Kala Ramachandran will assume the charge of the city police commissioner.

 

Ramachandran will take over the charge from outgoing Police Commissioner K K Rao who has been transferred to the Centre for Police Training and Research at Bhondsi near Gurugram.

 

Talking to PTI, Ramachandran listed managing traffic, providing safety and security to city residents and enhancing the ease of doing business among her priorities, besides focussing on basic policing.

Bengal govt allows schools to reopen from Feb 16

In a major step towards normalcy, the West Bengal government on Monday announced to reopen primary and upper primary schools from February 16, after a gap of nearly two years owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

 

In the fresh set of Covid restrictions announced by the state government, it has been mentioned that primary and upper primary schools will start functioning from Wednesday. The state government has also said that all Angnawadi centres will also reopen from the same day.

 

However, the state government has asked the school education department to formulate a detailed design regarding the mechanism of reopening of schools. Few days back, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had asked the state education department to think about the reopening schools.

UP polls: Priyanka campaigns for Congress in Bundelkhand

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday held poll campaigns for party candidates in the Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh where assembly election is due on February 20.

 

The Congress general secretary and party affairs in-charge in the state sat atop an SUV as she held door-to-door campaigns in Orai and Kalpi of Jalaun district.

 

Flanked by party workers and supporters, Gandhi also visited Maudaha in Hamirpur district for the poll campaign where she made fervent pitches for Congress candidates.

 

Purported visuals from the rally showed when the Congress leader was passing through the Maudaha market, she spotted a young girl in the crowd who was cheering for her. She then called the girl to her car.

The voting percentage on Monday till 3 p.m. in the second phase assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh was 51.93 per cent, 49.24 per cent in Uttarakhand and 60.18 per cent in Goa.

 

As per the Election Commission data, North Goa registered 60.02 per cent while South Goa registered 60.32 per cent voting till 3 p.m.

 

In Uttar Pradesh, Amroha district registered 60.05 per cent, Bareilly 49.84 per cent, Bijnor 51.81 per cent, Badaun 47.69 per cent, Moradabad 55.62 per cent, Rampur 52.63 per cent, Saharanpur 56.56 per cent, Sambhal 49.11 per cent and Shahjahanpur registered 46.79 per cent till 3 p.m.

Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls: BJP up against the Muslim challenge

The Rohilkhand region to Delhi’s northeast and Shahjahanpur to the tip of the Avadh region vote on February 14 in the second phase of polling in Uttar Pradesh. Between them, they contain 55 seats being contested by 584 candidates. As in most parts, the contest has narrowed to a straight fight between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Samajwadi Party-Rashtriya Lok Dal (SP-RLD) combine, with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in the fray in places — mainly on account of its candidates.

 

In Rohilkhand, too, the BJP maintained its victory streak in the 2017 election, picking up 38 seats, while the Samajwadi Party, in alliance with the Congress, got just 15 seats in an erstwhile stronghold. Although the tables haven’t yet turned, there is palpable worry in the BJP over retaining an invincible lead. Voting will be held across 165 seats spanning Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Goa today. The campaigning for polls ended on Sunday evening. In UP, this is the second phase of Assembly polls. The first phase was held on February 10. The results for all Assembly elections will be declared on March 10.

 

To cast votes in the Assembly election, you need voter ID and identification proof. Uttarakhand votes to elect new government

People of Uttarakhand are voting on Monday to elect their new government. Over 81 lakh voters in 70 Assembly constituencies will decide the political fate of 632 candidates, which include over 150 independents.

 

In 2017 Assembly polls, the BJP won 57 of the 70 seats. The Congress won 11 and two independents won from their Assembly segments.

 

Since its formation in 2000, power in Uttarakhand has changed every five years between the BJP and Congress. In this year, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is also trying to make its presence felt in the state by fielding candidates from all the 70 Assembly constituencies.
