UP gets maximum berths in Modi govt

The new government has 10 ministers from Uttar Pradesh--the most among states. It's followed by Maharashtra (7) and Bihar (6). Prime Minister Narendra Modi represents Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh's temple town, in Lok Sabha.

First-time ministers

One-third of the 24 cabinet ministers in the new government are first-timers--including BJP president Amit Shah and former foreign secretary S Jaishankar. Six cabinet ministers and 13 ministers of state will serve in the union council of ministers for the first time. Two former chief ministers-- Ramesh Pokhriyal (Uttarakhand) and Arjun Munda (Jharkhand) -- will be union ministers for the first time.

Sharad Pawar skips swearing-in over seating arrangement

Sharad Pawar, president of the Nationalist Congress Party, didn't attend the government's swearing-in at Rashtrapati Bhavan after he was allotted a seat in the fifth row, PTI reported. "It was not right" given that Pawar is a former union minister and a former Maharashtra chief minister, said a NCP spokesperson.

36 ministers sworn in for second term

Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Smriti Irani, Nirmala Sitharaman and Prakash Javadekar were among the 36 ministers who were sworn in Thursday for a second term, besides 20 MPs who took oath of office as cabinet ministers for the first time.
