Narendra Modi took charge as Prime Minister for a second term on Thursday after he was sworn in along with Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah and Nitin Gadkari as his top ministers.

Modi, 68, was administered the oath of office and secrecy by President Ram Nath Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. "Honoured to serve India!" tweeted Modi later.

BJP president Shah will join the central government for the first time. Foreign secretary S Jaishankar will join the cabinet too. 

As many as 24 cabinet ministers, 9 ministers with independent charge, and 24 ministers of state were sworn in.


Over 10,000 security personnel from Delhi Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed on account of Modi's swearing-in ceremony. 

Modi won a massive mandate in the general election that ended this month after focusing his campaign on national security.

The new government has 10 ministers from Uttar Pradesh--the most among states. It's followed by Maharashtra (7) and Bihar (6). Prime Minister Narendra Modi represents Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh's temple town, in Lok Sabha.

One-third of the 24 cabinet ministers in the new government are first-timers--including BJP president Amit Shah and former foreign secretary S Jaishankar. Six cabinet ministers and 13 ministers of state will serve in the union council of ministers for the first time. Two former chief ministers-- Ramesh Pokhriyal (Uttarakhand) and Arjun Munda (Jharkhand) -- will be union ministers for the first time.

Sharad Pawar skips swearing-in over seating arrangement

Sharad Pawar, president of the Nationalist Congress Party, didn't attend the government's swearing-in at Rashtrapati Bhavan after he was allotted a seat in the fifth row, PTI reported. "It was not right" given that Pawar is a former union minister and a former Maharashtra chief minister, said a NCP spokesperson.
