IPL 2018: Bowlers turn it around for RCB, Mumbai Indians lose by 14 runs

In 31st match of Vivo IPL 2018, chasing 168, Mumbai Indians lost by 14 runs to Royal Challengers Banglore, at M Chinnaswamy Stadium.RCB now climb to the 5th position in VIVO IPL points table

In the 31st match of the VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018, Mumbai's inning derailed just after the start and the batsmen couldn't bring it on track after that. RCB pulled up a great show with the ball this time and it did turn the fortunes for the team as they climbed to the 5th spot in VIVO IPL points table. Wickets kept falling at regular intervals and Mumbai had no answer to RCB's bowling attack. Mumbai desperately needed a partnership and RCB was denying it to them. With most of the top order gone much was left on Pandya brothers. Mumbai was in recovery mode as Pandya brothers stuck to the crease to build the much-needed partnership. The match moved towards the last leg and RCB needed a wicket here to avoid any unfavourable twist and that wicket came on the second last over as Krunal Pandya ended up losing his wicket, Mandeep took a simple catch. Hardik Pandya made his fifty and Mumbai needed a big over to win this one but RCB captain Virat Kohli took a splendid catch and ended Hardik Pandya's inning, and so Mumbai's hope of winning the match. RCB pulled a great victory and the revival of their bowling was another good sign for the team.

Mumbai Indians innings analysis after end of innings

Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan opened for Mumbai. Tim Southee opened the bowling for RCB and Yadav hits a boundary on the third ball. A chance of an edge came on the 5th ball but Yadav was dropped at slips by Vohra. Southee made the first strike in the next ball as the ball swung and hit the stumps, Kishan was back to the pavilion.JP Duminy came next and Yadav managed good line and length despite that he was hit for a boundary on the 4th ball. The second over ended with a boundary. Southee bowled the third over adn Duminy hit a classic cover drive on the second ball. Mumbai Indians were 21/1 after 3 overs. Suryakumar Yadav 9(8) and JP Duminy (9) were at the strike.

Yadav got the back to back success on the first two balls of the 4th over. Suryakumar Yadav was LBW and Captain Rohit Sharma was dismissed on a golden duck. Grandhomme continued from the other end and a wide ball went for four but he pulled back brilliantly to concede only 3 runs of the last 5 balls. The Mumbai Indians needed a brilliant partnership from Pandya brothers as the required run-rate jumped to over 11 runs per over. Umesh Yadav came to bowl the 15th over and gave only 6 runs as required run-rate jumped to 12.4 runs per over. Grandhomme came to bowl the 16th over and Krunal greeted him with a six over mid-wicket, a much need strike by Krunal. Hardik to collected a four of the 4th ball of a French cut. Siraj came to bowl the 17th over and conceded only 6 runs of the first 5 balls but Hardik hit the last ball for four to bring the run-rate down to less than 12 runs per over. Tim Southee came to bowl the 18th over and Krunal tried to score a maximum of the first ball but managed to get only a single. Grandhomme fielded brilliantly to save 3 runs for RCB as Hardik hit a brilliant shot down the ground. Southee bowled brilliantly to concede only 5 runs. Royal Challengers Banglore innings analysis after end of innings

In the first over Manan Vohra and Quinton de Kock opened the batting for RCB and JP Duminy came for the bowling for MI. Vohra slog-sweep and hit a six towards deep backward square on the second ball of the over. Mitchell McClenaghan came for the second over and RCB batsmen managed just two singles off it. Jasprit Bumrah came in with the ball in the third over, the batsmen rotated strike thrice. After 3 overs, RCB were 11/0. Manan Vohra 9 (12) and Quinton de Kock 2(6) were on strike.

Duminy came for the fourth over and Manan Vohra smashed back to back sixes and fours. The run rate and team score saw a sudden jump in the over. Mitchell McClenaghan bowled the fifth one and de Kock hit a boundary after three dot balls. Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma took a brilliant catch on the last ball of the over as he wrapped the ball under his fingers before it touched the ground. In a desperate need of wickets Rohit aksed his go-to bowler Bumrah and do produce a top edge but the ball falls in the no man’s land. Bumrah contained the run flow as he gave only 7 runs and didn’t allow Kohli to hit big shots. McClenaghan came to bowl the 15th over, McCullum got run out in desperate need to accelerate the run-flow. McCullum scored 37 runs off 25 balls with a strike rate of 148. Having beaten Chennai Super Kings in their adopted home ground of Pune, MI will go out with their tails up and confidence to take on the strong batting line-up of RCB, which has the likes of Virat Kohli and Brendon McCullum. Mumbai Indians defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore in their last encounter by 46 runs at the Wankhede Stadium, with Rohit Sharma and Evin Lewis hitting 94 and 65, respectively. For MI, except Suryakumar Yadav, who has 274 runs under his belt in seven matches as an opener, others have been mostly inconsistent. Rohit Sharma also needs to find form as the India opener has struggled to get past 20 in five games. Big-hitting West Indian all-rounder Keiron Pollard, in his twilight years, has been out of form. He was dropped in the previous game. Jean-Paul Duminy, who came in for Pollard in the previous game, would be itching to be in the thick of things. The South African did not bat in the last match as Mumbai crossed the winning mark without requiring his services.
 
Coming to the Pandya brothers -- Hardik and Krunal -- who have been good in their bowling, would like to get big knocks with the bat. They have managed to score just 61 and 113 runs, respectively, in the seven matches they have played. Mumbai will again bank on young spinner Mayank Markande, who has so far bagged 10 wickets from seven games with his leg-spin, to deliver the goods.
 
On the other hand, for RCB, the heartbreaking back-to-back defeats at the hands of CSK and Kolkata Knight Riders in their backyard would have devastated the team's confidence. But they will have to play out of their skin to stay in the competition. RCB would be praying for the return of AB de Villiers, who did not play the previous game due to fever. The South African star has been in his prime form this season, smashing 68 off 30 balls against CSK and singlehandedly defeating Delhi Daredevils with his unbeaten 39-ball 90. Kohli would be keen to produce another special knock in this crunch situation, especially after getting two unbeaten knocks of 92 and 68 against Mumbai and KKR, respectively. Opener Quinton De Kock, who has scored 194 runs so far, would like to carry on with his good performance. The spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar and seamers Chris Woakes and Umesh Yadav have done well in parts and need to bring their best in order to avoid another defeat which could endanger RCB's playoff chances.

What Suryakumar Yadav said about Rohit Sharma’s batting position: Mumbai Indians' highest run-getter this IPL season, Suryakumar Yadav, said his captain Rohit Sharma is likely to bat higher up the order in the coming games. "It is his and team management's decision to come down the order. May be he wants to take more responsibility by playing till the end. But, he has been performing at all numbers - at one-down or two-down. In the last game, he came up and shouldered the responsibility. We don't deserve to win if we field like that, said Virat Kohli: Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli said they didn't deserve to win against Kolkata Knight Riders and blamed the sloppy fielding for their six-wicket loss which has jeopardised their IPL campaign. "If we look back, we didn't deserve to win. I don't think we're trying hard enough, we need to be hard on ourselves. We don't deserve to win if we field like that. We can't afford to field like that and let singles go to boundaries. We were just not good enough tonight."
 
What MI captain Rohit Sharma said after winning against CSK: Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma believes their eight-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings will boost his side's confidence for the remaining Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. "Wanted this win desperately. In desperation, we didn't want to take decisions that won't go well. Wanted to stay calm. We've played good cricket. But that finishing touch wasn't happening," said the 30-year-old.
 
Venkatapathy Raju impressed with Markande's control over leg-spin: Impressed with leg-spinner Mayank Markhande's bowling for Mumbai Indians in the IPL, former India spinner Venkatapathy Raju praised him and termed control as the rookie's strongest point while also describing Sunrisers Hyderabad as having the best bowling attack. Markande, the main thing is (his) first year (and the) first match and they (MI) made him play which itself shows the talent he has. You have seen a lot of youngsters come in and they sit (out) for a year, then they are put in," Raju said.
