The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), Diamond Exporters Association, Bharat Diamond Bourse, and the Gem and Jewellery Exporters Association (GJEA) have joined hands with the Gemological Institute of India (GII) for setting up a research centre in Mumbai.

The centre will conduct research and development activities specially for synthetic diamonds as well as high pressure high temperature (HPHT) treated diamonds, announced Kirtilal K Doshi, chairman, GII, at the 25th annual convocation of GII.

A memorandum of understanding on this has been signed and the centre will operate with immediate effect, he added.

The R&D activities require huge investment and GJEPC will arrange finance. GII's tie-up with apex organisations like GJEPC would help the institute become a national body.

GII had to amend the constitution of the trust to induct 11 trustees including six trustees from GJEPC, three from GJEA, and one each from Bharat Diamond Bourse and the Diamond Exporters Association Ltd.

Synthetic diamonds and HPHT treated diamonds have upset diamantaires around the world. Gemmological laboratories around the globe have been equipped with high-tech instruments to tackle this problem.

India needed a sophisticated laboratory, said Doshi, to find solutions for problems faced by industry in identification of treatment, colour and origin.
