The Punjab State Cooperative Supply and Marketing Federation Limited (Markfed) has been declared the nodal agency for the farm sector in the state.
As its first project, it has signed an MoU with APEDA for setting up an agriculture export zone (AEZ) to facilitate export of potato. Under the AEZ policy, the state government shall evolve a comprehensive package of services, which include pre-post harvest treatment, protection, processing, storage and R&D.
The AEZ will help to strengthen price mechanism, provide value addition to agricultural produce, lead to quality improvement and create employment. The move has been initiated to encourage farmers to diversify from the traditional wheat-paddy rotation.
