The Sensex opened almost flat at 9,590 - up six points. The index after slipping a bit, recovered and rallied to a high of 9,725 led by fresh buying in realty and capital goods stocks.
However, a sudden bout of profit-taking in noon trades saw the index slip into red to a low of 9,511 - down 214 points from the day's high. The Sensex, however, rebounded into the positive zone and finally ended with a gain of 64 points at 9,647.
In the process, the index has gained 556 points in the last three trading days.
The BSE Realty index soared 6.6% to 1,536. The Capital Goods index surged over 3% to 6,484.
The market breadth was positive - out of 2,574 stocks traded, 1,374 advanced, 1,092 declined and 108 were unchanged today.
INDEX MOVERS...
DLF zoomed 9% to Rs 153.
BHEL surged over 4% to Rs 1,452. Larsen & Toubro and Mahindra & Mahindra rallied nearly 3.5% each to Rs 697 and Rs 284, respectively.
Reliance Communications and HDFC Bank soared over 3% each to Rs 172 and Rs 947, respectively.
Sun Pharma, Ranbaxy and Maruti gained around 2.5% each at Rs 1,118, Rs 233 and Rs 608, respectively.
Tata Power advanced nearly 2% to Rs 794. TCS and SBI were up 1.5% each at Rs 524 and Rs 1,164, respectively.
...AND THE SHAKERS
Reliance Infrastructure shed 2.6% at Rs 563.
Hindalco and Tata Motors dropped nearly 2% each to Rs 45 and Rs 139, respectively.
NTPC and ITC declined 1.5% each to Rs 180 and Rs 180, respectively.
Tata Steel and Sterlite were down over 1% each at Rs 197 and Rs 278, respectively.
VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS
Reliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 337.60 crore followed by Educomp Solutions (Rs 253.40 crore), Reliance Infrastructure (Rs 207.45 crore), United Spirits (Rs 175.90 crore) and Reliance Capital (Rs 162.15 crore).
Unitech led the volume chart with trades of around 3.41 crore shares followed by Cals Refineries (2.20 crore), Kohinoor Brothers (1.13 crore), GVK Power (1.08 crore) and Satyam (1 crore).
