14 arrested in Singapore on suspicion of global football match-fixing
14 people have reportedly been arrested in Singapore on suspicion of being part of an organised crime gang involved in global football match-fixing.
According to European and Singapore police, the 12 men and two women were detained during a series of raids, adding that the arrested also include the alleged 'mastermind' of the racket.
The BBC reports that the investigators said that they had identified 680 suspicious games, 380 of them in Europe, between 2008 and 2011, adding that the matches included World Cup qualifiers and the European elite tournament, Champions League.
Refusing to disclose the names and nationalities of the arrested persons, the officials said that the matches were targeted by a Singapore-based betting cartel whose illegal activities stretched to players, referees and officials across the world.
The report mentioned that Interpol and the European Union's (EU) law enforcement agency Europol have both been involved in the investigation.
