ACHR protests against another rape attempt of Chakma woman in Gurgaon

The Asian Centre for Human Rights (ACHR) today called upon Gurgaon Police to arrest the culprits who attempted to rape Pinky Chakma, the wife of Arun Jyoti Chakma, who hails from Kanchanpur in the North District of Tripura, on February 12.

Pinky Chakma and her husband have been living in a rented house belonging to Virendra Gujjar. On the evening of February 12, Gujjar, accompanied by two unnamed youths came to the Chakma residence to collect rent. Mr. and Mrs. Chakma were having dinner at that time and they left after receiving the rent.

However, after sometime, these two youths came back to the residence and repeatedly knocked at the door. When Mr. and Mrs. Chakma did not respond, the youths started banging the door. No sooner had Mr. Chakma opened the door, the two youth forced their entry into the house and rebuked Mr. Chakma and his wife in filthy language.

They demanded that Mr. Chakma let them take his wife and threatened him to kill him otherwise. The two youths assaulted both husband and wife, molested and tore off the clothes worn by Mrs. Pinki Chakma as they attempted to rape her.

Somehow both husband and wife manage to escape and took shelter with a friend staying about seven kilometers away from their residence.

The matter was brought to the attention of Joint Commissioner of Delhi Police Robin Hibu and Deputy Commissioner of Gurgaon Nazneen Bhasin.

The Sadar Police Station of Gurgaon registered an FIR No. 111/2014 under Sections 376, 511, 452, 506 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code against the accused on Thursday.

The Gurgaon Police is yet to arrest the accused.

"The Gurgaon Police must invoke the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the culprits must be brought to justice immediately, if such attacks on the North Easterners are to be effectively combated," said Suhas Chakma, Director, Asian Centre for Human Rights.
