Football legend David Beckham's dreams of owning a Major League Soccer (MLS) team has been put on hold by Manchester City.
Although the former England captain and Manchester United midfielder had looked at the prospect of becoming the owner of an MLS club in the US, however, City's launch of New York City FC, in partnership with baseball giants the New York Yankees, has taken the quota of MLS clubs to 20, the Mirror reports.
Following this, commissioner Don Garber said there was no room left for another franchise and Beckham will have to wait, adding that although he supported Beckham's prospective site of Miami, he said that the place has weather issues, even though it has a unique community and great diversity.
However, Garber said that he is pleased by Beckham's interest in the MLS, adding that Beckham's involvement in anything attracts positive interest and opportunity from sponsors, broadcasters, partners and fans.
According to Garber, Beckham may be able to transcend his playing career into a business enterprise successfully like he did in like NBA legend Magic Johnson did, adding that Beckham has got good advisors, and is a lot smarter than people give him credit for.
