New Zealand appeared to be in pole position in the Basin Reserve second Test against the West Indies on Thursday, when they snared the crucial wicket of veteran batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul to leave the visitors somewhat struggling at 158 for the loss of four wickets at the close.
New Zealand were bullish before day one, with plenty of grass on the wicket, humidity in the air and talk of teams being bowled out in quick time. But the Basin can be a bit of a tease and that's how things have proved this time.
Earlier, resuming from 307 for six, ended up on 441.
After Ross Taylor's 129, the Kiwi middle order wagged.
Skipper Brendon McCullum scored 37, Cory Anderson (38), B Watling (65), Tim Southee (21), Ish Sodhi (27) and Trent Boult (an unbeaten 38).
For the Windies, Tino Best claimed four wickets for 110, S.Gabriel and Darren Sammy claimed two wickets each, while Shane Shillingford and Narsingh Deonarine claimed a wicket each.
For the Windies, Kirk Edwards scored 55. Marlon Samuels and unbeaten 50, and keeping him company was Deonarine on an unbeaten 11. Cory Anderson has claimed two wickets for 20, while Southee and Boult have claimed a wicket each.
